Part II – Proficiency Test in Medical English

This part of the examination is a written English paper designed to test whether candidates’ command of English is adequate for professional purposes. Questions are in English only.

Format of Part II Examination and Passing Criteria

The test will last for 3 hours.
The paper consists of 4 questions, each of which carries a maximum of 10 marks. The grand total is 40 marks, and the passing mark is 20.
Each of questions I and II includes an article, and 10 ‘True/False’ type questions which are to be answered after reading the article. The articles may come from journals and guidelines, etc. 1 mark will be awarded for each correct answer and 1 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer. No mark will be awarded or deducted for questions not attempted.
Candidates are required to answer questions III and IV in English. In response to the scenario described in the question, candidates are required to write passages or letters and fill in the appropriate forms in the answer booklet.

Venue of Part II Examination

Part II Examination is usually held in the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building which is located in Wong Chuk Hang.

Candidates MUST bring to the examination venue the followings:
  1. Hong Kong Identity Card or passport (the SAME identity document registered in the application form)
  2. Letter of invitation (i.e. the covering letter). 
  3. Pen (blue or black ink).  Ball-point pens are also acceptable.
CANDIDATES WHO FAIL TO PRODUCE ANY SUCH PROOF OF IDENTITY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE EXAMINATION. NO REFUND WILL BE MADE FOR EXAMINATION FEES.
All belongings other than stationery should be placed under the chair. Mobile phones and all communication devices should be completely turned off and placed under the chair where they are visible to the invigilators.
Candidates are also advised to bring a watch that will not emit sound, store data or transmit information, as well as an overcoat, to the examination centre.
